The Motorola PEBL is a beautifully stylish phone that doesn’t have the most top-of-the-line features

, but it is definitely impressive to look at.

The Motorola PEBL is the successor to the wildly popular RAZR. However, in contrast to the RAZR’s familiar angular design, the PEBL is rounded and a bit thicker at 1.9 by 3.4 by 0.8 inches wide. It also weighs just slightly more than the RAZR does, weighing in at 3.8 ounces. It is okay to assume that the PEBL got its name from its design. It is jet-black, features rounded edges, and actually somewhat resembles an actual pebble. There are other colors available besides the standard jet-black. They include orange, blue, and green. The PEBL may be a bit bulky to wear in one’s pocket on a daily basis, however it is perfect for carrying in a purse or a briefcase or any bag of the sort. Some users find opening flip phones such as this one a bit challenging. However, opening the PEBL is quite easy even for a flip phone novice. When attempting to open the phone, all one has to do is just place their thumb atop the Motorola logo and push it forward ever so slightly. Users will find that after doing this the phone will easily flip open in a smooth manner. Inside the phone you’ll find a shiny keypad. Although the shiny surface may look and feel just like it is made of metal, the keypad is, in fact, made of plastic. So as not to take away from the aesthetically pleasing look of the phone, the built-in screen located on the outside offers only a basic monochrome display that is text only. It will show the time and information on the caller ID, but hardly anything more than that. The screen inside the phone is definitely a step up from that on the outside. It offers a fairly bright color display with a 176?220 pixel resolution. Users will find that 262,000 colors are displayed on this screen and the images are bright and clear. You can also use the external display to view the phone’s clock, battery life, and also its signal strength.

Users will find that the PEBL offers surprisingly good reception when it comes to both receiving and making phone calls. The sound that comes through the earpiece is clear and sharp, although the sound that comes through both the built-in speakerphone andor the earpiece isn’t extremely loud. However, the quality of transmissions isn’t as clear as that of the phone’s reception. Any voices that the PEBL transmits can have the tendency to sound just a bit fuzzy. On a good note, the PEBL is a quad-band phone, which means that users will be given the best experience possible when it comes to international roaming. When using the phone, expect it to last a rather long time. In fact, longer than, other similar phones on the market today. Users will find that a single battery charge will offer quite a bit of talk time. Included in the PEBL are Bluetooth 1.2 profiles that support headsets, file transfers, and also dial-up networking that work above its rather slow GPRS modem. This Bluetooth technology can be rather convenient when it comes to transmitting files. However, as Motorola users may have found with other phones offered by the brand, each and every time you need to use the discoverable mode, you must manually enable it. The mode automatically shuts itself off after only a minute, so this could be a bit of a nuisance for anyone who uses the mode often. The battery used in the PEBL is lithium-ion, and its rating is 740 mAh. It has been claimed that the battery life of the phone offers 5 hours of talk time and 10 and a half days of standby time. There is no higher capacity battery offered by Motorola for the PEBL, although users who want to extend the life of their phone can easily buy a backup battery for jst over $40.

The quad-band GSM PEBL is a world phone that supports several bands including the 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz. It also includes support for both the GPRS and EDGE. If using the PEBL with the provider T-Mobile, you can use what is called the T-Zones portal to access the phones basic functions such as images, ring tones, and also news sites. You can easily and quickly download additional ring tones, but please be aware that any ring tones featuring celebrity voices are impersonations. Users may also find it helpful that the PEBL is Java compliant and also supports J2ME. The PEBL does come with a built-in camera. The camera’s resolution, 640?480, may be considered modest by some users. However, the pictures taken are still as clear and crisp and those taken with higher resolution camera phones. The 4x digital zoom may sound like a great option, but using it can have the tendency to make what were once clear pictures seem blurrier and more out of focus. The PEBL also allows users to take video with their phone. All pictures and movies taken by using the PEBL are stored in the phone as JPEG files and 3gp files.

Users who opt for the Motorola PEBL will find that the phone’s included software is pretty standard. Basic functions included are a voice recording manager and messaging app. There is good news for those looking for a phone that will allow for easy text messaging. The instant messaging program included in the phone supports Yahoo and AIM. But, there is a little bad news for MSN users. MSN is not supported. Users of the Mac OS X can sync the phone’s address book by using iSync, which is a feature you won’t find in many other phones. Anyone looking for a fast-paced phone with a lot of features probably won’t be interested in the PEBL. However, those interested in a stylish looks with average functionality will find the PEBL is the best phone for them.
